Road Trip With the Explorer

As you may have guessed from the name, the Ford Explorer was made for explorers. If you want to head off the beaten path and have your own road trip adventure, this SUV is ready to get you there. You’ll have seating for up to seven passengers and loads of cargo room on top of that!

While you’ll have 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear row, the PowerFold® 50/50 Fold-Flat Rear Seat Backs give you a ton of ways to reconfigure your cargo and passenger space. If you fold both the second and third rows down flat, you’ll have up to 87.8 cubic feet to work with.

The available Cargo Management System will help you make the most of your cargo space. This feature includes extra pockets on the side and an underfloor storage area. It also has a reversible load floor with plastic bedding to protect the carpet from dirty cargo.

No matter where to road takes you, the Explorer can handle it with the available Terrain Management System™. You can choose from seven selectable drive modes to match the needs of your terrain, including options such as:

Get ready to bring your boat, jet skis, or camper along for the adventure because the Ford Explorer has a maximum towing capacity of up to 5,600 pounds when equipped with the optional Class III Trailer Tow Package.

2021 Explorer: Under the Hood

The standard rear-wheel drivetrain offers the strength and control you’ll need to handle most situations. There are several incredible powertrains for you to choose from to ensure you can tackle everything from daily commutes to cross-country road trips.

The standard 2.3L EcoBoost® 4-cylinder engine has 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque under the hood. If that’s not enough power for you, you could also try out the 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 engine, which can get up to 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque.

There’s even a hybrid powertrain available with a 3.3L V6 engine. This can offer 318 total system horsepower and 322 lb-ft of total system torque. Additionally, the hybrid trim can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped and is fully off-road capable.
